Your doctor's skill and techniques to preserve the anatomical tissue structures when an eye is removed greatly assists us in our attempts to duplicate the natural EYE. Your doctor's service does not end with the surgical procedures, as he/she is vitally interested in the rehabilitation of their patients. It is most important for you to follow your doctor's instructions. We will also consult with your doctor in an effort to achieve comfort and the most desirable cosmetic results.

A conformer is placed in a patient's socket following surgery. The conformer functions to maintain the volume of the eye socket and behind the lids while healing takes place. It also serves to provide protection of the socket and a smooth surface for the patient to blink over. Secretions may build up behind the conformer, and this is normal. Conformers come either with holes or without. The conformers with holes allow for drainage to escape, rather than build up behind the conformer.

A Methacrylate resin is used to make the plastic artificial eyes. A mold is taken of the sockets so the custom prosthetic is shaped for volume and matching lid contours. The iris is painted to match the patients' fellow eye as is the sclera and veining. A clear plastic cap is applied to protect these colors and produce a smooth finish for patient comfort. The artificial eye is a prosthesis that functions in several different ways. It helps to maintain the tissues and structure of the eye socket, allows tears to continue cleaning and lubricating, while holding the lids open to create a natural looking eye.

Evaluating the fit of an artificial eye

1. Size and Lid Contour

2. A proper posterior fit of the prosthesis over the anterior tissues in the ocular cavity for comfort and motility

3. Color of the White (Sclera)

4. Position and plane of the iris

5. Color of the iris and pupil size

6. Movement of the Artificial Eye

7. Movement of the eye is determined by the type of surgery performed by the Ophthalmologists and the accuracy of the impression fit by the Ocularist

8. Finally the ultimate objective is a comfortable fit with a pleasing natural appearance

We estimate three to five appointments to fit and fabricate a new artificial eye with subsequent follow up appointments.

The fees for our services on a new artificial eye include any adjustments and follow up for a six-month period and are covered by most insurance policies under DME (Durable Medical Equipment) or prosthetic benefit.
